Saudi Arabia builds world’s first offshore oil rig-style tourist resort

Located in the Arabian Gulf, The Rig spans more than 150,000 square metres and will host hotels, helipads and extreme sports

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) announced today the launch of The Rig, a new tourism project inspired by offshore oil platforms.

Designed to attract tourists from around the world, The Rig will be home to several hospitality offerings, including three hotels, multiple restaurants, and adventure sports facilities at sea.

One of the largest sovereign wealth funds in the world, PIF is developing The Rig as part of its 2021-2025 strategy to drive innovation in Saudi Arabia’s tourism and entertainment sectors.
