2026 Prix Versailles reveals World’s Most Beautiful Airports
Frankfurt and Mumbai among winners
Frankfurt Airport has been named among the World’s Most Beautiful Airports in the 2026 Prix Versailles awards, the global architecture and design awards programme. It joins six other newly built or renovated airports recognised for excellence in architectural design and passenger experience.
In a statement, the organisation said the 2026 selection “illustrates how airports are now turning away from the old standards in order to offer the world a richer, more harmonious point of view”.
Frankfurt Airport was the only European hub to be featured in the list. Other global winners include San Diego International Airport and Pittsburgh International Airport in the US, Techo International Airport in Cambodia, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in China and Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport in India.

Jérôme Gouadain, Secretary General of the Prix Versailles, described the winners as “innovative, inescapable hallmarks of their regions and their eras”, highlighting that modern airports have evolved beyond mere transfer spaces.
Frankfurt Airport was selected in part for its city-like design, with wide piers, lounges and boarding gates arranged to resemble streets and squares. The terminal also features artistic installations, including three suspended ring-shaped sculptures made of coloured aluminium discs that rotate continuously.
The accolade was awarded just months after Frankfurt Airport opened its renovated Terminal 3 in April 2026, marking one of the largest infrastructure developments in the hub’s history. Built on a 1.3-square-kilometre site, the terminal is designed to accommodate up to 19 million passengers annually, significantly expanding operational capacity.
Several international airlines have moved to the new terminal, including Etihad Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Korean Air and China Eastern Airlines.
The terminal remains connected to other parts of the airport via a driverless train system, allowing passengers to move from terminals in under 10 minutes.
Later this year, three of the seven airports selected will receive additional World Titles for overall design excellence, interior design or exterior architecture.
