Dubai unveils plan to transform beach into "global attraction"

The new design will also feature six main gateways inspired by Dubai’s architectural heritage, 10 mobility hubs, 11 taxi pick-up and drop-off points, and dedicated lanes and parking for bicycles and electric scooters.

A striking 38-metre observation tower, inspired by the city’s maritime heritage, will become a new landmark along the coastline. Meanwhile, parking capacity will rise by 200% to around 2,400 spaces, supported by improved access from Jumeirah Street and redesigned traffic flows to ease congestion in nearby residential areas.

Sustainability lies at the core of the redevelopment. To address rising sea levels, the plan includes a two-kilometre retaining wall and elevated beach levels, supported by new coastal engineering solutions.

“The goal is to create an inclusive, safe and accessible beach destination that brings together leisure, sports and culture for all segments of society,” said Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality.

The Umm Suqeim beach redevelopment forms part of Dubai’s broader shoreline enhancement strategy. In 2023, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, approved a plan to develop 54km of beaches around Palm Jebel Ali, Palm Jumeirah and Al Mamzar. In 2024, further plans were unveiled to create Dubai’s longest public beach at Jebel Ali.

As part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, other major tourism projects include a AED650 million redevelopment of Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary into an eco-tourism destination with cycling tracks, birdwatching towers and dining options, and the launch of the UAE’s first recreational vehicle (RV) route connecting a network of serviced parks and stations across the emirate.
