Etihad Airways, Emirates and Qatar Airways to reposition to new facility
Frankfurt Airport will open its Terminal 3 on 23 April 2026, marking a major capacity expansion at one of Europe’s busiest hubs.
Operated by Fraport, the new facility is designed to handle up to 19 million passengers annually in its initial phase, rising to 25 million once all three piers are completed. The project forms part of a modular expansion programme, allowing capacity to scale with future demand.
As part of the transition, Middle Eastern carriers including Etihad Airways, Emirates and Qatar Airways, alongside Korean Air and China Eastern, will relocate from Terminal 2, consolidating traffic within the new facility.
A central retail and dining marketplace spanning 6,000 square metres will anchor the passenger experience, complemented by lounges and workspaces for business travellers, as well as family facilities including children’s play areas.

Terminal 3 will be connected by a new automated people mover, a driverless train system linking the airport’s terminals, with journeys between Terminal 1 and 3 taking around eight minutes.
The development includes an 8,500-space car park with access via taxi, bus and road networks, alongside bicycle parking and upgraded road links to support higher passenger volumes.
The terminal has completed all regulatory inspections and is now in final operational trials, with around 8,000 test passengers taking part ahead of the opening.
