Hospitality group expands footprint with landmark hotel signing in Makkah
Marriott International has reached a major development milestone with 100 properties across Saudi Arabia, including both operational hotels and upcoming projects. The achievement coincides with the signing of a new agreement with Saudi-based investment group SEDCO Capital to develop a 1,100-room Courtyard by Marriott property in Makkah.
Expected to open in 2030, Courtyard by Marriott Makkah Masar will anchor the Holy City’s new Masar Destination, a multi-use development integrating commercial, retail, residential and cultural facilities that aligns with Saudi’s goal to host 30 million pilgrims annually by 2030.
The property will span 4,500-square-metres and feature multiple dining venues, a ballroom, a fitness centre, a kids’ club and retail stores.

Jerome Briet, Chief Development Officer of Europe, Middle East & Africa at Marriott International, said: “The signing of Courtyard by Marriott Makkah Masar reflects our confidence in the Kingdom’s tourism growth and infrastructure development.
“As part of our broader expansion aligned with Vision 2030, this project also strengthens our presence in the Holy City of Makkah and will offer visitors a modern, service-oriented hospitality experience within the landmark Masar master plan.”
Operating in Saudi since 1980, Marriott has more than 11,000 keys across 13 brands. Courtyard by Marriott is the company’s most widely represented brand in the kingdom, with six properties currently in operation.
Marriott’s growth also reflects a broader trend for expansion among hospitality groups in Saudi, as the kingdom looks to attract 150 million visitors by 2030.
InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has recently unveiled two new hotels for Saudi Arabia, adding a combined 338 keys: the 106-room Holiday Inn Riyadh Rose Yard, scheduled for 2026, and the 232-room Crowne Plaza Al Khobar Al Bandariyah, expected to open in 2027. IHG currently operates 46 hotels across six brands in the kingdom, with 60 more properties in the pipeline over the next three to five years.
Hilton is also strengthening its presence in Makkah, with two upcoming hotels in partnership with Wirgan Hospitality that will add 1,767 new keys to its portfolio.
