Oman to build 55km Muscat metro line

Oman has partnered with France to develop a new metro system in Muscat following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two countries.

The project will feature a 55km network running from Sultan Haitham City to Ruwi, forming a key east–west transit corridor designed to improve connectivity across the capital. The line will include around 42 stations and pass through major urban hubs such as Ghala, Al Khuwair and Muscat International Airport (MCT), with seven key interchange stations planned to allow for multi-modal transfers.

The metro is expected to enhance Muscat’s public transport system, reducing road congestion, improving cross-city travel times and supporting more sustainable urban mobility under Oman Vision 2040.

The project forms part of a broader package of 12 agreements signed between Oman and France, covering sectors including logistics, ports, aviation, renewable energy and water infrastructure. The agreements were signed in the presence of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and French President Emmanuel Macron in France, strengthening bilateral relations on large-scale developments. 

Transportation development across the GCC is expanding rapidly, with neighboring UAE recently launching its first passenger services for the Etihad Rail, running between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah during this first phase. 

Beyond the UAE’s seven emirates, Etihad Rail will also expand into Oman, following a partnership with Oman Rail for a railway corridor between the two countries. The US$3 billion project will feature a 303km railway, connecting Sohar in Oman to Abu Dhabi, with an estimated journey time of 1 hour and 40 minutes.
