Facial recognition now available across more than 700 touchpoints
Passengers departing from Hamad International Airport (HIA) can now complete their airport journey using facial recognition instead of physical travel documents, following the launch of the airport’s new Fast Pass biometric programme.
Developed by HIA, Qatar Airways and technology partner SITA, the rollout features more than 700 passenger touchpoints across check-in, bag drop, security and boarding, making it one of the largest biometric passenger deployments of its kind globally.
Passengers can enrol in Fast Pass through the Qatar Airways app during mobile check-in or at a self-service kiosk in the terminal. Once enrolled, facial recognition replaces the need to present a boarding pass at each stage of the departure journey, from baggage drop to boarding. Participation is optional, with conventional document checks remaining available.

In the coming months, HIA plans to extend Fast Pass to Qatar Airways’ transfer passengers, before making the service available to other airlines operating at the airport. Enrolment and verification are also expected to expand beyond the terminal.
Selim Bouri, President of Middle East, Africa and Türkiye at SITA, said: “The way people move through airports is changing, and trusted digital identity is at the centre of it. When a passenger is verified once and recognised across the whole journey, the airport runs more smoothly while travellers remain in control of their data. Hamad International Airport has shown what that looks like at full scale across every major touchpoint.”
The rollout follows strong passenger growth at HIA. According to DragonPass, the airport recorded the strongest performance among the GCC’s major aviation hubs in May 2026 as regional travel rebounded following disruption linked to the Iran conflict. Qatar also emerged as the Gulf’s fastest-growing travel market during the month, with demand rising 165.1% between April and May.
