Inaugural sailing from Malaga to Rome features 5,000 balloons and debut of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory theatre show
On 29 June 2026, Legend of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s newest Icon Class ship, set sail on her inaugural voyage, departing from Malaga, Spain.
The 5,610-passenger ship hosted international partners, travel trade and media, including delegates from the Middle East, who were invited on the cruise line’s historic journey to experience everything the new Icon Class vessel has to offer.
Bookings are now open for sailings on Legend of the Seas. Running from 4 July to 18 October 2026, the seven-night Western Mediterranean round-trip, operating from Rome or Barcelona, visits Palma, Marseille, La Spezia and Naples.
The ship takes the title of the original Legend of the Seas, launched in 1995. While passenger capacity has increased from the 1,800 of its namesake, the gross tonnage has grown from 69,000 to 250,800.
At the port, guests were met on a Royal Caribbean pink – rather than red – carpet flanked by staff who offered a high-octane welcome. Entering directly onto the Royal Promenade, the ship’s main boulevard, the vessel was abuzz with greetings and reunions as associates from all markets congregated, having flown in from all around the world throughout the day.
Celebrations began with pool parties on the upper deck, bathed in the blazing Malaga sunshine, and continued with the FIFA World Cup. Among the venues airing the famous footballing tournament, Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade attracted a lively crowd of Brazilian fans decked out in the team’s famous yellow and green strips. Celebrations erupted as Brazil scored a late goal to beat Japan by two to one.
The revelry continued into the night with passengers being treated to a spectacular fireworks display off the coast of Malaga before gathering back at the Royal Promenade for the official launch countdown. The crowd sang and danced along with the resident DJ and MC as 5,000 pink balloons were released from above.

Present at the event and hosting leading Middle East delegates, Mohamed Saeed, Managing Director of Royal Caribbean Arabia, said: “Standing on the Royal Promenade as the countdown hit zero and 5,000 balloons came down, what struck me wasn’t the scale of the ship, it was how personal it felt despite it.
“I watched our Middle East trade partners, some meeting each other in person for the first time, react the same way: genuine disbelief that a vessel this size could still feel like a celebration in a room, not a stadium.
“That’s what makes Legend of the Seas different. It’s not just the biggest thing we’ve launched, it’s the one that still feels like it was built for the people standing in front of you.”
The four-night sailing continued to Rome, Italy with a scheduled stop in La Spezia for excursions to Florence, Pisa and Cinque Terre.
During the sailing, guests were treated to new speciality dining concepts, including Royal Railway – Legend Station, a semi-digital dining experience bringing explorer Marco Polo’s travels to life and the debut of Royal Caribbean’s highly anticipated theatre production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which received a standing ovation from the awestruck audience.
The Icon Class vessels are the largest cruise ships in the world. These behemoths feature record-breaking attractions including Category 6 water park, the first at-sea water park featuring six record-breaking slides, including the first open free-fall slide and the tallest drop slide on a cruise ship.
Other attractions include The Pearl, a huge sphere-like structural focal point at the heart of the Royal Promenade, which acts as both a visual landmark and an integral support system for the upper decks, and The Hideaway, the cruise industry’s first suspended infinity pool at sea, surrounded by a cascading multi-level terrace.
Entertainment onboard the Icon Class ships reached new heights with the Aquadome, the largest glass-and-steel structure to ever be placed on a cruise vessel, functioning as chill-out area by day and transforming into a water theatre presenting dare-devil diving stunts by night.
