Cruise line claims ‘world first’ as Tom Kerss appointed to new role
Hurtigruten has appointed the world’s first ‘chief aurora chaser’ with the aim to enhance its Northern Lights sailings.
The cruise line will host astronomer Tom Kerss on designated voyages, where he will lead talks and workshops while organising “engaging and guest-focused” activities.
Hurtigruten chief executive Hedda Felin said: “With Tom Kerss as our very own chief aurora chaser, the world’s first-ever as far as we know, we’re taking our Northern Lights commitment to new heights.”

Kerss added: “Norway is undeniably the premier location for experiencing the Northern Lights, and Hurtigruten provides an unparalleled platform for travellers to witness this celestial marvel.”
The cruise line has also extended the period covered by its ‘Northern Lights Guarantee’, which now starts in September rather than October.
Guests on North Cape Express and The Original Coastal Express voyages of 11 days or more who do not experience the Northern Lights during their voyage, get a six-day southbound or seven-day northbound Original Coastal Express Classic Voyage free of charge (terms and conditions apply).
Hurtigruten has also introduced select astronomy sailings for 2025/26, allowing guests to travel with “renowned” experts while enjoying lectures and Northern Lights viewings.
