Can sustainability credentials convince consumers?
Eight Marriott hotels in Dubai have been awarded Green Key certification, a recognised standard for environmental responsibility and sustainable operations within the tourism industry.
The certified hotels are:
- W Dubai – Mina Seyahi
- The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina
- Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Waterpark
- Le Meridien Dubai Hotel & Conference Centre
- Aloft Dubai Airport
- Aloft Al Mina
- Element Dubai Airport
- Element Al Mina
To be eligible for the Green Key, hotels are rated against a set of criteria that examines factors such as staff involvement, F&B practices, water use, waste management and energy use.
The Green Key is intended to show guests that a hotel is committed to reducing its environmental impact – however, it certifies establishments that exclusively offer guests imported bottled water in their restaurants.

It's common in Dubai for restaurants to only offer guests water imported from as far away as Italy, France and Norway, despite consumer demand for sustainable alternatives, while the option to order local filtered water is extremely limited.
W Dubai – Mina Seyahi, The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina and Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Waterpark have also been awarded the Dubai Economy & Tourism’s ‘Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp’.
Initiatives across the three hotels include a shared onsite water bottling plant (for water supplied in rooms only), while the culinary team at W Dubai – Mina Seyahi has created a zero waste menu.
