Zayed International able to manage increases in traffic demand
Abu Dhabi Airports has completed its work on the Zayed International Airport’s (AUH) Northern Runway earlier than scheduled.
Now fully operational for arrivals and departures, the Northern Runway has been resurfaced with 210,000 tonnes of asphalt and had its technology upgraded.
The advancements include a new ground visibility monitoring system for increased safety, an Instrument Landing System (ILS) for improved operational precision, and the replacement of more than 1,200 energy-intensive halogen airfield lights with environmentally-friendly LED bulbs.
Abu Dhabi Airports said the transition to LED lighting is in line with its pursuit of sustainability and environmental responsibility, while the upgrades to navigational aids like the ILS and Runway Visual Range (RVR) systems should bolster the safety and efficiency of aircraft operations, especially during periods of wet weather.

Throughout the closure, Abu Dhabi Airports managed operations via the Southern Runway as a single-runway operation but said returning to dual-runway operations immediately allows the airport to meet growing demand more effectively.
Director General of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi said: “The successful completion of the North Runway Rehabilitation Project at Zayed International Airport reflects not only the strategic foresight of Abu Dhabi Airports but also the UAE’s dedication to innovation and sustainable growth in the aviation sector.
“This project reaffirms our commitment to enhancing the global standing of UAE airports, in line with both the GCAA and national vision for long-term prosperity.”
Abu Dhabi Airports Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Elena Sorlini added: “This enhanced infrastructure will enable us to effectively manage continuous increases in air traffic demand and optimise airport throughput at AUH."
