South Asia operator adds 18th-century monastery in Piedmont to its Heritage portfolio

Atmosphere Core, a leading name in hospitality in South Asia, is exporting its luxury hospitality standards from the Maldives to a monastery in Italy.

With a lineup of four brands and 14 properties, including nine in the Maldives, the company has ambitious expansion plans beyond the Indian Ocean with 12 properties set to roll out across India by 2027, including the recently opened Sadar Manzil Heritage by Atmosphere Bhopal, a 19th century royal building with 21 suites.

Now, Atmosphere Core is set to make its European debut, with a second Heritage by Atmosphere-branded property, expected to open in 2026 in Italy's Piedmont, a Unesco World Heritage Site in the northwestern region renowned for its wines.

Set on a hillside, Borgo Monchiero Heritage by Atmosphere is a sensitively restored boutique property, showcasing sacred frescoes and Romanesque architecture, that will offer 19 suites and rooms and a chapel, making it ideal for weddings.

Atmosphere Core’s Group Managing Director Salil Panigrahi (pictured) said the expansion into Europe from its existing South Asia market was in part due to the relationships the business has formed across the continent, and especially in Italy.

Guests at Borgo Monchiero can enjoy fine regional cuisine and explore the local vineyards, while a spa includes a sauna, infrared therapy and stone jacuzzi. There is an outdoor swimming pool in the landscaped gardens.

Owners Franco Giampetruzzi and Gian Maria Debenedetti said they partnered with Atmosphere Core as its Heritage brand aligns with their vision of Borgo Monchiero as “a harmonious fusion of art, 18th-century history and experiential luxury”.

Borgo Monchiero joins the couples-only Sadar Manzil Heritage by Atmosphere Bhopal, a 19th-century royal building with 21 suites that recently made its debut in India. It features a restaurant, wine tasting room, bar, wellness centre and swimming pool, and offers curated experiences.

Armed with ambitious expansion plans, Atmosphere Core has said it will open 12 properties across India by 2027, with plans for openings in the Middle East and Africa, too.

Atmosphere Core's hotel brands include Atmosphere Hotels & Resorts, The Ozen Collection, Colours by Oblu and Heritage by Atmosphere.
