European airports to reinstate hand luggage restrictions

Passengers limited to carrying up to 100ml in liquids from September 2024

Travel clients transiting through Europe from September 2024 should be made aware of new hand luggage restrictions.

Liquids are once again being restricted by the Airports Council International (ACI) in Europe, which has issued new guidelines that revert back to past regulations.

Passengers are now limited to carrying liquids of no more than 100ml in their hand luggage.

From 1 September 2024, airports in the Schengen zone must adhere to the reinstated rules, including those that had previously installed CT scanning equipment and removed the restrictions on passenger hand luggage.

Several airports are affected by the restrictions, including Berlin International Airport, Amsterdam's Schiphol and Rome-Fiumicino International.

The news comes just weeks after a similar announcement was made by the Department for Transport in the UK last month regarding the restriction of liquids in hand baggage at airports, including Aberdeen, Newcastle, Leeds and London City.

The change has been announced as a temporary measure but no end date has been given, while larger airports such as London Heathrow will not introduce the changes until 2025.
