Numbers down as Middle East conflict continues
Seven million passengers passed through Jordan's airports during the first nine months of 2024, according to recent data released by the Ministry of Transport.
Figures were down 10% in the third quarter compared with the same time in 2023. The second quarter saw a 5% decline, sitting at 2.3 million passengers.
The most significant drop occurred in the first quarter, with passenger numbers decreasing by 30% compared with 2023 to 2.013 million, according to the data.
In late October, Intrepid Travel noted that bookings to Egypt and Jordan had fallen significantly as a result of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

A comprehensive 2019 study by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Consulting, commissioned by Airport International Group (AIG), reported that the Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) supported 238,000 jobs and contributed 8.9% to Jordan’s GDP.
These figures are projected to rise to 278,000 jobs and JD3.9 billion (US$5.5 billion) by 2032, which underscores QAIA’s role as the country’s primary entry point. Currently, QAIA handles over 97% of passenger traffic and 99% of cargo.
Earlier this year QAIA secured the title of ‘Best Airport by Size and Region: Middle East’ for airports serving five to 15 million passengers for the second consecutive year and eighth time in its history. The accolade was awarded by the Airports Council International World (ACI World) based on the 2023 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Survey.
