Qatar welcomes record 5 million visitors in 2024, up 25% on last year

Landmark achievement for Qatar Tourism as 10 million room nights sold

More than five million visitors arrived in Qatar in 2024, hitting record highs and a 25% hike on last year’s benchmark, according to data from Qatar Tourism.

This surge in international arrivals is evidence of Qatar’s growing status as a tourist destination, building on the success of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

“Surpassing five million visitors is a landmark accomplishment for Qatar, bringing us closer to realising our vision of positioning the country as one of the world’s fastest-growing, family-friendly premier destinations,” said HE Chairman of Qatar Tourism, Saad Bin Ali Al Kharji.

“This 25% year-on-year growth, alongside the exceptional sales of 10 million room nights, underscores the effectiveness of our strategy and the collaborative efforts of our stakeholders.”

This growth is in line with Qatar’s goals of tripling visitor numbers between 2022 and 2030, and increasing total tourism contribution to the GDP to 10%. Thus far, visitor numbers have doubled since 2022, when Qatar welcomed 2.5 million visitors.

According to Qatar Tourism, 59% of visitors in 2024 were from international markets, with the remainder from GCC countries, and 56% of visitors arrived by air.

Key source markets were Saudi Arabia, India, UK, Germany and the US, attracted by Qatar’s culture and luxury hotels. There were also expected peaks in visitors for events including the AFC Asian Cup and the Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix.

Infrastructure investments are clearly paying off. The hospitality sector has grown to meet rising demand, with more than 40,000 hotel rooms, compared to less than 30,000 in 2021.

Underscoring the destination's appeal, Hamad International Airport in Doha was named the World’s Best Airport in the 2024 Skytrax World Airport Awards.

Travellers from 102 countries can enjoy visa-free access to Qatar, and flag-carrier Qatar Airways now connects more than 170 destinations to Doha.
