Costing US$22.5bn, the launch is part of the largest public transport project in the world

Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistics Saleh Al-Jasser has announced that public transport buses will start operating in Riyadh in March 2023.

The bus service will be the first phase of the King Abdulaziz Public Transport Project. Costing a total of US$22.5 billion, the project will eventually include a public rail and metro networks and is reported to be the largest public transport project in the world.

Al-Jasser also announced that the Riyadh Metro will also start operating in the coming months.

At last month's World Economic Forum in Davos, The Royal Commission for Riyadh City CEO, Fahd Al-Rasheed said that the public transport project in Riyadh had been delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, Al-Rasheed added: “Today, we are looking at a plan to expand the Riyadh metro lines in light of the city’s population growth.”

The Riyadh Metro is also part of the King Abdulaziz Public Transport Project. It includes 85 railway stations, as well as the six major metro lines that have been established to cover the capital city from all directions.

There will also be a network of buses, covering an area of 1800km. It was revealed recently that more than 80% of the railway stations works and 350km of railroads across the city have been completed.
