From self-drive buggy safaris to dome glamping, Zerzura and OceanAir unveil heritage-rich adventures
No trip to the UAE is complete without a desert adventure, and the rollout of new experiences is set to take the concept to greater heights.
To meet growing demand for authentic experiences within the emirates, tour operators are reinventing the desert escape, crafting itineraries that are immersive and sustainable, and allow for a deeper connection with local cultures and landscapes.
Now, two operators with direct access to heritage-rich regions in the UAE, are bringing new adventures to travellers from the GCC and beyond.
Zerzura Desert Experiences
As the only operator to offer self-drive dune buggy excursions in the UAE’s Mleiha National Park, just 40 minutes from Dubai, Zerzura Desert Experiences is offering thrill seekers unmatched access to this UNESCO-nominated area.
Launched in January 2025, these self-drive safaris are guided by desert experts and storytellers who reveal the secrets of Mleiha’s ancient past, from pre-Islamic forts and ancient burial sites to areas rich in fossils.
The signature dune buggy experience sees guests crossing the desert in 2000cc and 3000cc vehicles designed for fun and safety, with personalised journeys also available, customised to guest preferences, be it adventure or culture.
Post-drive, Zerzura offers dining under the stars, with a menu that pays homage to the desert’s Paleolithic, Neolithic, pre-Islamic and Islamic periods with dishes such as ancient harvest freekeh salad and camel kofta patties spiced with cumin, coriander and cinnamon.
Conscious of the history and harmony of Mleiha, Zerzura’s camp is powered entirely by solar energy, and overnight glamping experiences here come with comfortable, eco-friendly tents.

Al Marmoom Domes
Conservation also takes centre stage at Al Marmoom Domes, a newly opened luxury desert retreat from OceanAir that offers an immersive cultural experience.
As the only operator with access to the Al Marmoom Conservation Reserve, an area abundant with native wildlife, OceanAir is committed to providing “exceptional luxury experiences in the heart of Dubai’s desert while maintaining our commitment to sustainability and cultural preservation”, said Essam Al Salah, CEO, OceanAir.
Located within the Al Marmoom Oasis, the lush resort blends traditional Emirati heritage with modern luxuries and lush greenery, giving guests access to 170 bird species, protected Arabian oryx and gazelles, local flora and fauna and sparkling lakes.
Guests can enjoy one-, two- or three-night stays in the UAE’s first all-glass domes complete with 360-degree dune views, private butler service, pools and an array of activities, including heritage safaris, camel caravans and expert-led stargazing sessions. Visitors can also enjoy horseback riding, sunrise yoga and cultural workshops.
Traditional Emirati dining is hosted in-dome, at the on-site cafe or under the stars with live cooking stations and signature Arabic coffee ceremonies.
Joining the domes later in 2025, Al Badia Village is nestled between two lakes and will feature luxury tents, gourmet dining and a stage for performances.
