Marriott to turn historic Cairo landmark into Autograph Collection Hotel

Makeover of Mogamma government building in Tahrir Square part of plan to revitalise downtown area

An historic 1940s government building in downtown Cairo is set to be converted into a 500-key luxury hotel.

Cairo House Egypt for Real Estate has signed an agreement with Tourism Investment SAE and Marriott International to convert the 14-storey Mogamma Al Tahrir into an Autograph Collection Hotel.

This will mark the first Autograph property in Egypt and ninth in the Middle East.

The hotel will be a focal point for regeneration of the historic downtown area, in line with The Sovereign Group of Egypt’s (TSFE) long-term tourism vision.

Mogamma Al Tahrir building

TSFE has taken over 11 former ministry buildings in downtown Cairo, which they will repurpose, with plans to add 2,600 hotel rooms and develop weekend pedestrian zones and green spaces.

The colossal Mogamma Al Tahrir, which was once used to process  passports and visas, is situated in the heart of the diplomatic quarter, surrounded by embassies and banks.

Once renovated, it’s expected to have 500 guest rooms and serviced apartments, as well as multiple dining and entertainment venues and a rooftop pool overlooking Tahrir Square, with views of the Nile and the Giza Pyramids in the distance.

The Autograph Collection features more than 300 hotels, each with a distinct look and feel.

There are eight Autograph properties in the Middle East, with five in Dubai and four in Africa.

In October 2024, hospitality management company Gulf Hotels Group and Marriott International agreed to add Gulf Hotel Bahrain to the Autograph Collection Hotels group.
