Coastal destination awarded honour for its rich historical and cultural heritage
The Arab Tourism Organisation has chosen Sur in Oman as its Tourism Capital for 2024.
The ancient province of Sur, which is located on the northern side of Oman’s Eastern Coast in the South Sharqiya Governorate, was chosen for its cultural, historical and geographical significance.
About 337km from the Omani capital of Muscat, Sur is home to stunning beaches and ports that have made it an important maritime centre since ancient times. It also attracts visitors looking to explore its mountains and valleys.

Sur is considered the cradle of many ancient civilisations and was once a centre for maritime trade and shipbuilding. It still houses one of the oldest traditional shipyards, where building a single ship takes two full years. Here, visitors can see models of traditional Omani ships.
Sur's archaeological sites date back to between the third and first millennium BCE, reflecting the rich heritage of Oman, and historical landmarks include Al-Rasfa Castle, Al-Ayjah Fort and Ras Al-Hadd Fort.
Sur’s selection as the 2024 Arab Tourism Capital will assist its tourism authorities in establishing more tourism projects to further preserve, rejuvenate and develop the destination, make Sur one to watch for travel agents and operators.
