Saudi Arabia to install cable car system to Cave of Hira

Aerial lift will connect pilgrims to significant religious site

Saudi Arabia will open a new cable car system in 2025 to connect pilgrims with a site on Mecca's Jabal Al Noor.

The Cave of Hira holds religious significance as the site where the Prophet Mohammed received his first revelation of the Holy Quran.

The initiative, aimed at improving the pilgrimage experience, will connect visitors to the cave, situated approximately 634 metres above sea level and around 4km from the Grand Mosque.

The project is part of a broader development plan, which includes the completion of the Hira Cultural District and the opening of three new museums in Jabal Omar, also scheduled for 2025.

The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah underscored the significance of Mount Al Noor and the Cave of Hira in Islamic heritage.

Jabal Al Noor, or the Mountain of Light, is known for its distinctive shape resembling a camel's hump, and its steep slopes. The cave itself, with a capacity to seat five individuals, holds deep importance for Muslims due to its connection to the Prophet.

Previously, visiting the cave was challenging due to the mountain's steep incline and rugged terrain. However, the recent inauguration of a paved road has made access easier.

Fawaz Al-Muhrej, CEO of Samaya Investment Company, which is overseeing the cable car project, confirmed that the system will open in 2025 as final preparations are underway.
