Fallout from Iran conflict extends far beyond Middle East, finds survey
Nearly 80% of travel companies reported a decline in holiday enquiries following the outbreak of the Iran war, according to a survey by UK-based travel agency Responsible Travel.
More than 100 global operators were surveyed and all of those selling tours in the Middle East region reported a drop in enquiries of 20% or more.
The survey found that the fallout from the conflict has also impacted travel firms operating outside of the Middle East. More than half of the operators running Asia and Europe itineraries have experienced declines with 68% of Asia tour providers and 52% of Europe tour providers also reporting the same decline of 20% or above.
For some travel companies, bookings have stalled entirely since the escalation, with cancellation rates reaching as high as 90% in some cases.

Sentiment across the sector was mixed. While some respondents flagged concerns over longer-term disruption, others expect demand to recover within weeks, particularly among operators in less-affected regions.
Tim Williamson, Customer Director at Responsible Travel, said: “From an industry perspective, the drop in tourist numbers, as well as rising costs associated with a prolonged conflict, hits small businesses and communities dependent on tourism the hardest.
“We’ve heard firsthand from many of our members worldwide of the significant impacts already felt and concern for livelihoods. It’s imperative that this ceasefire becomes permanent and stability resumes.”
With the current two-week ceasefire still technically holding, the conflict has, for now, shifted into a standoff of rival blockades over the Strait of Hormuz, leaving the global economy caught in the crossfire.
