Saudi-Syria venture to revive landmark hotel as country accelerates tourism development
Syria’s Ministry of Tourism has unveiled a partnership with Saudi Arabia’s Le Park Concord Hotels & Resorts to redevelop the Seven Gates Hotel in central Damascus.
The transformation of the former Sheraton Damascus Hotel is part of Syria’s broader strategy to modernise its tourism sector and elevate hospitality standards in the capital.
Set to open in 2028, the reimagined property will feature luxury accommodation, destination dining, retail outlets and leisure amenities.
Situated in the heart of one of the world’s oldest cities, the Damascus property is named after the seven historic gates that once defined the entrances to the ancient city: Bab Sharqi, Bab al-Jabiya, Bab Kisan, Bab al-Saghir, Bab al-Salam, Bab Touma and Bab al-Faradis.
Its redesign will draw inspiration from this rich heritage.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Minister of Tourism His Excellency Mazen Al-Salhani said the project is a “major step forward in our efforts to revitalise Syria’s tourism industry and unlock its true, full potential”.

He added: “We invite regional and international investors to explore the wealth of opportunities Syria has to offer, from historic cities like Damascus to our coastal, cultural, and natural attractions. Together, we can build a tourism sector that generates sustainable growth, creates jobs, and showcases the beauty and heritage of our country to the world.”
Al-Salhani recently announced US$1.5 billion in new contracts to develop hotels, resorts and heritage sites.
Increasingly, airlines in the GCC are returning to Damascus after more than a decade, with Etihad recently announcing a direct service to the Syrian capital from June 2026 and Saudi low-cost airline Flynas starting services to Damascus from Jeddah and Riyadh in June 2025.
Prior to 2011, Syria attracted more than eight million international visitors annually, drawn to destinations such as Damascus, Aleppo, Palmyra and the Mediterranean coast.
Founded in 2015, Le Park Concord operates 13 hotels and resorts across Saudi Arabia, with more than 900 rooms and has a pipeline of 13 additional projects set to add more than 2,000 keys, including 100 Super 8 by Wyndham properties by 2035.
