2 Dubai restaurants named in World's 50 Best Restaurants 2023 ranking

Peru's Central named number one 

• The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2023 list was revealed in Valencia, Spain on 20 June
• The 2023 list includes restaurants from 24 territories in five continents 
• In 2023 12 new restaurants debut on the listing
• Dubai's Tresind Studio and Orfali Bros Bistro land at 11 and 46 respectively
• Central in Lima is named The World’s Best Restaurant 2023  
• Table by Bruno Verjus in Paris takes homes the Highest New Entry Award at number 10 
• Atomix in New York is the highest climber Award, rising 25 places from the 2022 list to number eight

In a huge culinary boon to the UAE, Dubai's Tresind Studio and Orfali Bros Bistro have entered the World's 50 Best Restaurant listing, debuting at numbers 11 and 46 respectively. 

Tresind Studio's Himanshu Saini and Orfali Bros Bistro's Mohammad Orfali along with brothers and pastry chefs Wasim and Omar all honour their culinary heritage, with Saini elevating Indian cuisine with French cooking techniques and Orfali presenting exciting updates on Syria's classic dishes.

The UAE's culinary leaders were honoured at an awards ceremony held in Valencia, Spain at Les Arts Opera House among an audience of their global peers on 20 June 2023.

Dubai's Ossiano, helmed by chef Gregoire Berger, also placed on the extended list at 87, making a total of three UAE restaurants to achieve 'W50B' status.

Earlier in March, Orfali Bros Bistro topped the MENA's 50 Best Restaurants 2023 ranking, followed by Tresind Studio in second place and Bahrain's Fusions by Tala in third place, with Ossiano at number four.

Despite taking a top three position in the Middle East's regional ranking, Fusions by Tala ran by Tala Bashmi didn't place in the global list. 

For the regional MENA list, panellists each voted for seven restaurants that they'd visited in the last 18 months, five of which could be in the country where they live, encouraging local nominations. 

For the international list just announced, panellists are selected from around the world. In 2023, each one voted for between six and 10 restaurants depending on their ability to travel internationally, which was reduced in some cases due to the pandemic. A maximum of six restaurants could be located in the voter's home region, meaning international voters were able to focus on their own countries, and in some cases were limited to the number of overseas restaurants they could visit.

Based on the judging criteria for both listings, this suggests that Bahrain isn't yet on international voters' radars as a place to visit, and that's an untapped opportunity for the country's tourism division. 

Tala Bashmi, Fusions by Tala

Lima’s Central, the flagship Peruvian restaurant of chefs Virgilio Martinez and Pía León, was named The World’s Best Restaurant 2023, as well as The Best Restaurant in South America 2023. It takes over from the 2022 winner, Geranium, Copenhagen, which is now elevated to the Best of the Best hall of fame (see below). The top three is rounded out by two Spanish restaurants, Disfrutar (number two) in Barcelona and Diverxo (number three) in Madrid.

Here's the World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023 list:

South America further strengthened its position in global gastronomy, with nine restaurants featured overall including two new entries: Pía León’s Kjolle (28) in Lima and El Chato (33) in Bogotá. 

Asia followed with seven restaurants on the list, including Singapore’s Odette named The Best Restaurant in Asia (14) along with new entries Le Du (15) and Gaggan Anand (17) in Bangkok, and Sézanne, Tokyo (37). 

Other winners included Rasmus Munk's Alchemist (5) in Copenhagen, which took the Gin Mare Art of Hospitality Award; Pía Salazar of Nuema, Quito, who is the recipient of The World's Best Pastry Chef Award, and Miguel Ángel Millán of Diverxo, Madrid, who is the second-time winner of the World's Best Sommelier Award.

The winner of the Highest New Entry Award is Table by Bruno Verjus (10). The self-taught French chef serves simple, seasonal, no-fuss cuisine at this Paris restaurant, which has developed a loyal following among the city’s gourmands and is rapidly becoming an international dining destination.

Atomix (8) won the Highest Climber Award and was named The Best Restaurant in North America, after the New York favourite climbed 25 places from its position in last year’s ranking. The intimate 14-seat tasting menu restaurant from husband-and-wife team Junghyun ‘JP’ and Ellia Park features progressive and distinctive Korean food has been widely acclaimed.

Julien Royer of Odette (14) in Singapore wins the Chefs’ Choice Award and the Sustainable Restaurant Award went to Cape Town’s Fyn (75).

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023 list is voted for by 1,080 international restaurant industry experts and well-travelled gourmets who make up The World's 50 Best Restaurants Academy. The gender-balanced Academy comprises 27 separate regions around the world, each of which has 40 members including a chairperson. No sponsor from the event has any influence over the voting process.
