RailBus will offer safe and sustainable travel in urban areas
Dubai has announced plans to build a sustainable, solar-powered, mass transit system called RailBus.
A model of the autonomous system was displayed at the World Governments Summit on Dubai’s Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) stand.
RailBus, a startup which has its headquarters in the UAE, has designed carriages using 3D printing technology and recycled materials to provide a lightweight structure.
Each carriage is 11.5 metres long and 2.6 metres wide, and has a capacity of 40 passengers. RailBus has a maximum speed of 100km/h, comfortable seating and Wi-Fi connectivity.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General at RTA, said the system aligns with the UAE Net Zero Strategy 2050, the Dubai Net Zero Emissions Public Transport Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Autonomous Transport Strategy 2030, with a goal to make 25% of all trips in Dubai autonomous by 2030.
“RailBus is solar-powered, highly efficient and cost-effective, integrating with Dubai’s public transport network,” said Al Tayer. “It also enhances first and last-mile connectivity, ensuring safe, smooth and sustainable travel for residents and visitors in urban areas.”

RailBus could offer a similar solution as the Dubai Tram, which connects with Dubai Metro to serve the Dubai Marina community. The tram service links Dubai Metro and the Palm Monorail and runs along Al Sufouh Road and Jumeirah Beach Road.
Al Tayer praised RailBus for its scaled-down infrastructure and operational costs, which are 20 to 30% lower than similar systems. Energy costs are also lower thanks to the primary source of solar power.
RTA will complete technical studies on the system within the next two years, and then identify locations for pilot operations.
Launched in 2009, Dubai Metro is being expanded to meet demand and serve the city’s growing footprint. The Blue Line is a new 30km route that will strategically link key areas via 14 stations. The project is scheduled for completion in 2029, coinciding with Dubai Metro’s 20th anniversary.
