Capacity enhancements lead to 16.7% traffic surge paving the way for a milestone year
Sharjah Airport has reported its highest-ever quarterly passenger total, handling 5.1 million travellers in the third quarter of 2025.
The figure marks a 16.7% increase on the 4.39 million passengers recorded during the same period last year and surpasses the highs seen earlier in 2025.
The number of scheduled and non-scheduled flights also rose by 10.7% to 30,737, up from 27,758 in the third quarter of 2024.
Combined with the first-half results – 9.1 million passengers across Q1 and Q2 – the new figures signal Sharjah Airport’s strongest momentum yet, setting it on course for a record-breaking year.
The rise in traffic parallels record activity at nearby Dubai International Airport (DXB) and forecasts indicating that Middle East airports will serve 466 million passengers in 2025, up 5.9%, supported by continued infrastructure investment, fleet expansion and strong tourism flows.

Fuelling the growth has been the introduction of new carriers and expanded regional connectivity. Syrian airline Fly Cham now operates seven weekly flights to Sharjah from two cities in Syria, while Ethiopian Airlines has added four-weekly services to Addis Ababa.
Saudi Arabia’s low-cost carrier Flynas has also launched services connecting Saudi cities and Sharjah. In addition, homegrown carrier Air Arabia has introduced new routes to major European destinations, including Munich, Prague and Warsaw.
Sharjah Airport Authority chairman Ali Salim Al Midfa said the performance underscores the airport’s “continued operational growth and its vital role in supporting the aviation sector in line with Sharjah’s long-term development plans”.
He attributed the success to sustained investment in infrastructure and digital transformation initiatives aimed at boosting efficiency and improving passenger experience.
Ongoing projects are set to expand the airport’s capacity to handle 20 million passengers annually by 2026 and 25 million by 2027.
The expansion includes new terminal construction, taxiway upgrades, extended waiting areas and enhanced cargo and logistics facilities, positioning Sharjah Airport for continued growth through the remainder of the decade.
