Deira pathways connect seven traditional markets and more than 500 shops
Dubai has opened three new heritage trails in Deira, transforming the historic district into a cultural tourism destination while preserving its trading legacy.
The AED9.5 million initiative is designed to connect visitors with the emirate’s rich trading past while strengthening Deira’s role as one of Dubai’s most vibrant cultural hubs.
Located on Dubai Creek’s eastern side, Deira was the city’s main commercial hub for decades, with narrow lanes and bustling markets still attracting visitors seeking authenticity.
Today, that legacy is being reimagined through the new trails, which span almost 1.8km and link seven traditional markets and more than 500 shops across 25,800 square metres.
Key landmarks on the routes include the Gold Souq, Al Ahmadiya School and the Spice Souq, with pathways guiding visitors through stalls selling everything from herbs and perfumes to carpets, textiles and household goods.

To maintain authenticity, construction incorporated traditional materials such as sarooj, a lime-based plaster, alongside the restoration of wooden shading structures.
Enhancements also include rehabilitated façades, upgraded pavements, improved shop lighting and seating areas, shaded walkways, clear signposting and three new public squares, offering upgraded amenities for shoppers and tourists.
Commenting on the new trails, Bader Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency at Dubai Municipality, said: “Deira, with its heritage and traditional markets, is an inseparable part of Dubai’s cultural and historical identity.”
“This project honours that deep-rooted legacy while keeping pace with the present and future. It reinforces Dubai’s global standing as a cultural and tourism hub, offering experiences that combine authenticity with innovation.”
Developed within the framework of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, the project is part of broader efforts to preserve the emirate’s architectural identity while enriching the visitor experience.
