Luxury property is housed in a restored 1736 Ottoman caravanserai
Syria’s Ministry of Tourism has opened a new five-star hotel in the heart of Damascus, the Khan Suleiman Pasha Hotel, signalling renewed momentum in the country’s journey to revive its tourism sector after more than a decade of conflict.
Located on the historic Medhat Pasha Street within the Unesco-listed Old City of Damascus, the property is housed within a restored Ottoman-era caravanserai — a historic inn for travelling merchants — that dates back to 1736. The restoration was led by the Wahoud Group, which sought to preserve the building’s original character while adapting it to meet modern hospitality standards.
Blending heritage and contemporary design, the 25-room hotel features authentic Ottoman architecture, including original stonework featuring Arabian ablaq techniques of two-tone structures, alongside Damascene arches.
Dining options range from an outdoor courtyard restaurant to a traditional tea lounge and private dining chambers. The hotel offers three event spaces as well, including an indoor gallery.

Reflecting on the opening, Mazen Al Salhani, Minister of Tourism, said: “The inauguration of Khan Suleiman Pasha reflects a broader national vision that views heritage sites not merely as places to be preserved, but as living spaces that can be reintegrated into the tourism and economic cycle.
“Through such projects, we aim to revitalise historic cities, enhance the quality of the visitor experience and strengthen partnerships with the private sector in support of sustainable tourism recovery.”
The launch reflects increasing confidence in Syria’s tourism revival, coinciding with a steady rebound in air connectivity and visitor interest. In 2025, a number of GCC carriers resumed flights to the Syrian capital, including Qatar Airways and Air Arabia Abu Dhabi, while Etihad prepares to launch direct services from Abu Dhabi in June 2026.
In addition to Khan Suleiman Pasha, the Ministry of Tourism revealed that a former Sheraton Damascus Hotel will also be redeveloped as a Seven Gates Hotel, scheduled to open in 2028.
