First stage of walkways planned for Deira’s Al Ras district
Dubai is set to transform the historic Al Ras neighbourhood in Deira with the first phase of its Dubai Walk Master Plan, creating pedestrian-friendly corridors that boost access to key cultural landmarks.
The project will deliver 12km of walkways and 5km of cycling tracks, connecting major heritage sites across key points in ‘Old Dubai’, including Al Shindagha historic district, Al Fahidi Fort and the Gold and Spice Souks. Residents and tourists can benefit from improved access, with integration across 11 metro, bus and marine transport stations.
As part of the project, 10 artistic spaces by Emirati artists will be incorporated, featuring murals, sculptures and lighting installations. Walkways will also feature expanded green spaces, seating and shaded areas designed to enhance the pedestrian experience.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of Roads and Transport Authority, said: “The plan supports Dubai’s Quality of Life Strategy 2033 and contributes to enhancing community wellbeing by transforming Dubai into a pedestrian-friendly city, elevating pedestrian safety standards and strengthening connectivity between various districts and the existing walkway network.”
The broader Dubai Walk Master Plan aims to connect more than 6,000km of paths across the emirate by 2040, with 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses linking key neighbourhoods and cultural hubs. Phase one will run from 2025 to 2027, with subsequent stages continuing through to 2040.
These developments also support Dubai Urban Plan 2040, which seeks to transform the emirate into a ‘20-minute city’, where essential services are easily accessible within 20 minutes.
